A FORMER Sedbergh care home could get a new lease of life as a hotel if plans are given the go ahead.

A proposal to transform the Beamsmoor Residential Care Home on Garsdale Road has been submitted to the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority by Mr and Mrs N Close.

If given the green light, a hotel with 12 ensuite bedrooms and manager's accommodation would be established.

Planning documents compiled by Lancaster-based agent SD Consulting state: "There has been a need identified in the Sedbergh area for short stay holiday accommodation following the national trend in more frequent short breaks. The area has some unique demands with local schools and the client is confident that the business is a long term viability."

The existing building was constructed in 1879 as a detached private residence and has been altered and extended over time.

In 1982 the building was purchased by the current owner Mr Close, and was converted into a home for the elderly. In 1984 a three storey extension was erected to provide additional accommodation and a manager's flat.

The existing Beamsmoor building is not listed and SD Consulting says there would be 'no impact on the heritage and character of the building or the area' as the exterior of the building is to remain unchanged.

"The social spaces have been located at the front of the property away from the neighbouring residential property to the rear," SD Consulting's statement states.

It is anticipated that the hotel would create one full-time and two part-time jobs which SD Consulting believes will be supported by the YDNPA.

The grounds would be landscaped to provide a large gravel carpark while the exterior of the building will remain mostly unchanged.

Sedbergh Parish Council have not submitted any objections to the plans and a decision from the Yorkshire Dales National Park is expected within the next couple of weeks.
