A FURNESS student is searching for the heroic Kendal man who risked his life to help walk her to safety after a terrifying motorway crash.

India Grace feared being smashed into by cars travelling at 70mph after she aquaplaned on the M6 southbound between junctions 36 and 37.

The 20-year-old said she lost control of her Ford KA while overtaking.

She said weather conditions were 'not very nice' and that there was standing water and possibly ice on the road.

The Edge Hill University student said she took her feet off the pedals and swerved into where she was turning, spinning and hitting the central reservation multiple times before coming to a stop.

"I stopped and I was really panicky," she said, explaining that cars had been swerving around her but nobody else crashed. "I just didn't know what to do."

A car stopped behind her and its driver moved one of her wheels that had torn off but then drove away without offering any other help.

"I was on the phone to 999 and they told me to get out of the car and get to the central reservation, which I did," she said. "It was at that moment that I saw Dave, the man who I'm trying to reach out to."

Dave had pulled over in the layby when he saw India's car, got out and crossed the busy motorway to see if she was okay and talk to the emergency services on the phone for her.

"He walked me back over the motorway to the hard shoulder away from all the cars," India, who is studying geology with physical geography, said. "He helped me over while holing me, just to make sure I didn't fall.

"He went back to his car and got four blankets and wrapped them around me and was holding them and hugging me at the same time. It was lovely."

Dave, who had a red car and is from Kendal, then went back to her car to retrieve her belongings once the emergency services had arrived.

India has escaped the incident relatively unscathed with just a few minor head injuries, whiplash and bruises and now wants to properly thank Dave for his 'courageous' actions.

"My parents really want to say thank you as well," she said. "God knows what would have happened if he didn't help me because I would not have wanted to cross that motorway by myself."

"I want to speak to him personally and say to him thank you so much, without you I don't know what would have happened to me."
