ULVERSTON could host its first-ever 5km Saturday morning Park Run as soon as the end of May, organisers hope.

Officials from the Park Run organisation, which hosts the free-to-enter events around the country, are set to meet with volunteers in the town's Ford Park ahead of the inaugural run.

Park Runs are already held at Fell Foot, Barrow-in-Furness and Millom, but the Ford Park event is set to offer additional choice for Cumbrian runners, whatever their level of fitness, ability or experience.

Suzanne Pender, chair of Ford Park Trustees, said interest was already brewing strongly ahead of the first run, although a firm date had not yet been arranged.

"Obviously we want to promote the park in the community and bring in more people, but also bring in more people to Ulverston," she said.

"There does seem to be an appetite for it. There are quite a lot of running groups already in Ulverston and a lot of people do run in Ford Park. It certainly seems to be generating some interest."

Park Run events are managed by volunteers, and the next step is for people to indicate whether they would be willing to assist.

A presentation to provide more informations about how runs are held will be given at Ford Park on Monday, February 26, from 7pm.

Although Park Run events are free to enter, £3,000 is required to establish a new event. Ulverston Business Improvement District (BID) have supplied the funding for the Ford Park run.

"It will involve the whole town, with people of all ages, and goes towards the Healthy Ulverston initiative we have at the moment," said Jan Hancock, chair of Ulverston BID.

"It is also a draw for people from outside the town because Park Runs are national things and have people from all over the country travel to do different ones.

"It should be a good thing for Ulverston all around."
