SOUTH Lakes residents have been invited to step out together to add to a national charity's 'billion steps a day' challenge.

This year, the team behind Sport Relief are setting the nation the challenge of collectively achieving a billion steps every day from March 17-23.

And to help with the effort, South Lakeland primary schools, sporting clubs and residents have been invited to join in on Kendal Rugby Club's pitch on March 23.

Councillor Clare Feeney-Johnson, co-organiser of the event, said that the aim was to get as many people as possible on to the pitch to do a 'giant step out from Kendal'.

"We want to get as many people on the ground as we possibly can," she explained. "Its aim is to get as many people as active and counting their steps as possible.

"We are going to set up a path way around the pitch that will maximise the number of steps the young people and teachers walk. We are going to encourage them to use the Sports Relief app where possible or step counters which we can add to the steps from Kendal."

Sporting clubs have also been invited to take part in the event, with athletics teams, runners and even a curling group already signed up to share their skills.

"From 5pm we are inviting our community to come along and step into the shoes of local sporting groups," Cllr Feeney-Johnson said. "And try out their sport. So, the more groups that can come and share their skills the better.

"I think there's an awful lot of sports out there and one of the things behind Sport Relief is getting people out there more active and to show being active is fun."

From 5pm, members of the community are invited to try different sports and from 7pm the aim is to get people on the pitch for the giant step out.

From 7.30pm there will be a ‘step onto the dance floor’ to finish off the event. Tickets will cost £10 and include hot snacks.

To raise funds for Sport Relief, participants can buy a card, which when they have taken part in each individual sport, they will obtain a stamp for.

When they have completed the card, they can enter it into a draw for an active family fun prize.
