DALLAM Tower Estate is targeting an old barn as a lunch hut for shooting parties.
The estate's plans to convert Athas Barn, at Haverbrack Lane, near Milnthorpe, have attracted support from several residents keen to see the stone-built barn and its timber roof trusses restored.
According to plans lodged with South Lakeland District Council, Dallam Tower Estate uses the barn for storage during the game bird shooting season, from September 1 to February 1. The shoot is "a significant local employer" with two full-time gamekeepers and around 900 "man days" of part-time work provided during the season.
However, country sports enthusiasts do not have a lunch hut or cloakroom nearby, so the estate hopes to convert the two-storey barn on a private lane between Cockshott Lane and Lovers Lane, north of Beetham village.
One supporter said the plan "makes a lot of sense" as it would benefit shooting parties as well as helping to preserve an historic rural building that was "suffering due to lack of maintenance".
