A MAN died yesterday (February 22) after falling more than 300 ft while climbing near Coniston.
Coniston Mountain Rescue team was called shortly after midday to reports of a man who had fallen while scrambling down Dow Crag.
17 members of the team attended with other emergency services, but despite the best efforts of all involved, the man had succumbed to serious multiple injuries.
Organisations among those helping in the rescue effort included the Great North Air Ambulance and Rescue 199 from HMCG Prestwick.
A spokesperson for Coniston MRT said: "We would like to extend its condolences to the man’s family and friends.
"With the existing conditions the snow is hard packed in gullies and where the sun doesn’t reach and hence any slip or stumble can result in a serious outcome.
"Despite reasonable temperatures at valley level and a recent thaw of some lying snow, many areas remain in full winter conditions. With colder weather now becoming entrenched again for the foreseeable future, and the likelihood of further significant snowfall, the team would like to reiterate previous recommendations regarding correct equipment and experience."
