AN Australian artist's work is to be put on display at Farfield Mill in Sedbergh thanks to some dedicated fans who met him on holiday.

Jimmy Aitkenhead, who is 90 and lives in Brisbane, makes large wall hangings by cutting into lino.

John and Gill Ioannou, from Howgill, met him in a jazz bar and they became friends, going to his house to see his art. Now they want to bring his art to people in their home county so it can be shared further afield.

Gill said: "I am just really keen to show people. I don't like the idea of all this beautiful art work being rolled up in a container where nobody can see it.

"Jimmy was a fascinating person to meet. The art expresses itself in all kinds of different images. You can't see a specific scene or anything like that.

"But you have to see it for real to properly experience it."

Jimmy, originally from Scotland, moved to Australia as a "£10 Pom" in 1950 and has lived there since.

He has exhibited his art in Australia a number of times but this will be his first time in the UK.

His art will be on show in the small exhibition space at Farfield Mill for three weeks from March 6.

The exhibition will consist of three large hangings that the Ioannous have in their own possession, plus three more large ones Jimmy has sent and a smaller one.
