FROM removals firms to conveyancing and estate agent fees, the average cost of moving house is around £9,930. But you can do it for a fraction of that, say the penny-pinching experts at voucher code website PromotionalCodes.org.uk.

From buying vintage or second-hand furniture, to inviting friends to a moving party, they have devised a list of ways to save money.

“Forking out for a large removal van staffed with people to unpack your goods may be time saving, but it certainly won’t save you any cash," says the website's Darren Williams.

“Following our 10 simple tips will help you knock back the cost of moving everything in and should help you look after your finances in the long run.”

1. Moving home is a great time to declutter unwanted belongings and will prove cheaper for those hiring a van or a removals company.

2. Organise a moving party by rounding up your closest friends, and donning comfy old clothing to pack, move and unload.

3. If you do use a removals firm, bear in mind that Fridays, weekends and the summer are the busiest and most expensive times, so be flexible on dates if you can.

4. Buy second-hand furniture from internet auction sites, which can often be delivered to your address or collected upon sale, saving hassle and a long delivery wait.

5. When disassembling furniture, store fiddly parts like screws, nuts and bolts in a freezer bag, then stick to the corresponding furniture, so there will be no need to replace lost parts.

6. Redirect mail to prevent personal details from falling into the fraudsters' hands.

7. Visit supermarkets for free cardboard boxes, and wrap fragile items in bedding, towels and clothes.

8. Use up fresh and frozen perishable food before moving.

9. Take a look at your outgoings by comparing quotes for gas, electricity and internet providers.

10. Lastly, moving is messy, so put down flattened boxes, sheets and tarpaulin to protect floors and furniture.
