TWO much-loved north Lancashire pools are back in the swim.

Carnforth's swimming pool has been officially reopened by town mayor Cllr Pat Wooff and eight-year-old Grace Cook, who won a competition to help design a new logo.

Meanwhile, Hornby pool looks set to reopen "immediately after Easter" after the building was transferred to the Lune Valley Community Society by Lancashire County Council. The community group has been given £27,000 towards costs.

At the unveiling of a plaque at Carnforth pool, Cllr Woof said: “Well, 40 years on and we have our pool back in Carnforth ownership which pleases everyone who ‘bought a brick’ when the community opened the pool. It was a novel idea at the time and raised a lot of money.

"Many of the original fundraisers are now seeing their grandchildren learn to swim, which is much safer than swimming in the canal which we did as teenagers.

"Good luck to the new management and please use our pool."

Carnforth's Kellet Road building celebrates its 40th birthday this Sunday (March 18). To mark the anniversary, swimmers completed a 40-mile swimathon. The pool is now run by Carnforth Community Swimming Pool Ltd after an asset transfer from the county council. For more, visit www.carnforthpool.org or the Facebook page @carnforthpool.
