FROM bricklayers to joiners, an award-winning housebuilder has launched its 2018 search for young talent.

Story Homes, whose current developments include Greengate Meadow, Levens, has taken on 24 apprentices during the past two years.

The Carlisle-based company says it is committed to "investing in and developing young talent".

Alongside work experience and a graduate scheme, the developer says its apprenticeships are a key part of achieving "ambitious future plans" - as well as helping "towards closing the skills gap in the industry".

Story Homes launched the Aspire Apprenticeship Scheme in 2016, setting out to recruit the "brightest and most passionate" school and college leavers aged 16 upwards.

New recruits work towards NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 through on-the-job training, with the potential to move into trainee site management at the end of the programme.

In September 2017, 12 bricklaying, joinery and technical apprentices joined Story Homes, taking part in a five-day residential team-building and induction course before starting their roles on-site or in the office.

Last year's intake was so successful, the housebuilder is to offer apprenticeships in bricklaying and joinery for 2018 in Cumbria and the North West.

Shelley Hayward, Story Homes' talent and development manager, said: “As a rapidly growing housebuilder, we recognise the importance of playing our part in addressing the skills shortage in the construction industry.

"Bringing apprentices into the business is a crucial part of our recruitment strategy. By providing young people with sustainable positions and training programmes, we can find the next generation of talent to continue Story Homes’ growth.
