PUPILS from a north Lancashire primary school had a day to remember as they rubbed shoulder with members of the Royal family at the Commonwealth Service in Westminster Abbey.

Monday's celebration was the first official royal engagement for Meghan Markle, Prince Harry's fiancée, and children from Wilson's Endowed School at Over Kellet were lucky enough to be there for the occasion.

All the dignitaries, including The Queen, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, walked past the children with fanfares playing above their heads.

The service included a traditional Maori welcome and a musical number by Liam Payne, formerly of One Direction.

Head teacher Jo Williams said: "We were thrilled to be able to share in such an auspicious occasion. Our pupils enjoyed celebrating the coming together of communities both locally and globally. The day also helped them recognise the enduring global partnerships enjoyed through the work of the Commonwealth."

Prior to the service the pupils were invited to lunch at 10 Downing Street, meeting other youngsters from around the country.

Prime Minister Theresa May had hoped to join the children but had to attend an urgent meeting. However, there was much fun and laughter as celebrity chef Ainsley Harriot ate with the children.

Thomas Fox, aged 11, helped Ainsley making fruit kebabs in the Downing Street kitchens.

Thomas said: "It was really exciting cooking in one of the Prime Minister's kitchens."
