CHILDREN got their hands dirty planting the next generation of trees on the Cowran Estate in Pennington, near Ulverston.

Helped by Ulverston-based charity TreeLife and with support from the Woodland Trust, Year Five pupils from Pennington C of E Primary School dug holes to plant trees in 20 cages across Park Field.

The wooden tree cages will help protect them from sheep and cattle as they grow. Along with oaks, field maple and sweet chestnut, trees like hawthorn and rowan were also planted.

These will help protect the bigger trees and provide flowers for bees and berries for the birds.

In the corner of Park Field, nearest the village of Loppergarth, the children helped Anne Diss, of Cowran Estate, plant a Coronation Oak, marking the Queen's Diamond Jubilee of 2012.

It had been planted in a pot six years ago but will now grow with other trees in the field as a legacy to The Queen.
