TEAMS of Cumbrian young farmers gathered at The George Hotel on to compete in the county final of the Open Brainstrust Competition.

Third place went to South Lakeland team Lowick YFC.

Competitors showed great skill in talking about topics which included; the impact of Brexit on farming, Meghan Markle, the “nanny state”, paying for the NHS, and the re-introduction of National Service.

The judges, Mr Gordon Brown and Mrs Christine Knipe, Chief Executive of the Westmorland County Agricultural Society commended the teams on their debating skills and commented on how much they had enjoyed the evening.

The Caldbeck YFC team of Rachel Graham, Jonathan Hird, Emma Armstrong, Emma Armstrong and Laura Westgarth were placed first. Second place went to the Raughton Head YFC team of Robbie Tuer, Phil Potts, Amy Blamire and Euan Bulman.
