A MISS Cumbria finalist hopes to help others if she were to win the crown.

Lucy Smith, 18, from Dufton near Appleby, was walking through The Lanes shopping centre in Carlisle when she was asked if she would like to apply for the competition.

“I was spotted by the current Miss Cumbria, Claire Bell. She asked if I wanted to apply, so I gave my details and had my photo taken," Lucy said.

"A few days later I received the news that I was a finalist. It was such a surprise.”

While Lucy is studying for her A-levels in chemistry, geography and maths at Appleby Grammar School, she is also raising funds for the Variety Children’s Charity.

“I also enjoy acting. Throughout the past few years, I have been involved in acting through drama classes at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick to performing in plays," she said.

“I have also attended various workshops in London.”

If Lucy wins the crown in the final on April 28 at Harraby Community Theatre in Carlisle, she plans to develop her charity work and make her reign benefit others.

“I would like to continue raising money for Variety Children’s Charity and also other charities close to my heart," she said.

“I would also like to raise awareness that all people should be treated the same way no matter who they are or what their circumstances are.

“I would also hope [winning the competition] would open up new opportunities for me by meeting new people, improving my confidence and doing new experiences.

“Most importantly, being crowned Miss Cumbria would be a great opportunity to do more to for others.”

Lucy is organising a coffee morning and raffle in Dufton Village Hall on Saturday April 14 between 10am-2pm.
