A NINE-YEAR-OLD South Lakeland biking fanatic is gearing up to cycle more than 300 miles to raise thousands for a cancer charity.

Felix Cooper, who lives in Penny Bridge, near Ulverston, and is known to friends as 'Bizz', takes part in everything from road racing to 'scary' downhill courses.

Now, he wants to use his love of cycling to complete an epic Hebridean trip from Barra to Applecross, to raise £5,000 in aid of Breast Cancer Now.

Starting in September, he will cycle through 11 islands, over six causeways and use four ferries over five days.

"The idea for the ride was through my dad’s friend who is organising the event," he said. "I cheekily read my dad’s Facebook feed on my iPad and came across the event and wanted in on the action.

"His name is Tim and his wife was taken poorly with cancer last year.

"This story made me think of a close family friend who went through a very similar ordeal with her own family last year.

"I’m lucky to be in a position where I can use my love of cycling to raise some money to give back to the charities and people who helped people like Tim’s wife and my friend.

"This money can help not only the people who have suffered in the past, but people who are currently going through a similar ordeal with their own family and friends."

Felix is a member of the Penrith-based cycle club Beacon Wheelers and regularly attends the Urban Extreme indoor ramp park in Barrow with friends.

"I will be in training over the summer so be sure to give me a beep if you see me out and about," he said.

Local help is coming not only from friends and family but from local businesses including The Farmers Arms in Baycliff, Ride Bikes shop in Ulverston, Velo bike shop in Ulverston and Athersmith’s Garage.
