A 73-YEAR-OLD man, believed to be from the Carlisle area, has died as a result of a crash on the A66.
The collision occurred at around 5.40am this morning (April 3) and involved two HGV vehicles.
The A66 will be closed between Kirkby Thore and Crackenthorpe, in both directions, for quite some time, whilst investigations are carried out.
A 22-year-old man from South Yorkshire has been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody helping with enquiries.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area, congestion is likely around this area and on diverted routes.
Westbound traffic is being diverted to the A685 west via Kirkby Stephen to join the M6 northbound.
Eastbound traffic is directed to use the A69 and A65 using M6 and Kemplay roundabout.
Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police referencing incident 18 of April 3, 2018.
