A MAN accused of being responsible for a fire at a Kendal church "with intent to endanger life" will go on trial later this year.
Jeffrey Hayton, 52, faced two charges when he appeared at Carlisle Crown Court today.
Hayton denied one allegation of arson with intent to endanger life. This alleges that on February 26, without lawful excuse, he damaged by fire robes belonging to St George's Church, Castle Street. It is alleged he did so "intending to destroy or damage such property, and intending thereby to endanger the life of another".
Hayton - wearing a tweed jacket over a white T-shirt in the dock - also pleaded not guilty to allegedly burgling the church with intent to do damage therein. This arises out of the same incident.
It is estimated that his trial will last two to three days. This is due to start at the crown court in the week commencing June 4.
In the meantime, Hayton was remanded in custody by Judge Barbara Forrester.
