A YOUNG South Lakeland woman walked 96 miles to help farmers in Nepal rebuild following 2015's devastating earthquake.

Rowan Boardley, from Skelsmergh, near Kendal, took on the West Highland Way to raise £2,000 ahead of a trip to Kathmandu later this year.

The Grayrigg Young Farmer needs the money to take part in the National Federation of Young Farmers volunteering travel program.

The former Queen Katherine School pupil picked up litter as she trekked from Milngavie, near Glasgow, to Fort William with only walking boots on her feet and a camping stove and tent on her back.

In August, the 22-year-old is travelling to Nepal with NFYFC volunteers to take part in a community improvement program at the Nepalese capital, working alongside local farmers and small holders following on from the earthquake.

"The project will involve being hands-on with both animals and crops, as well as educating locals through a series of workshops," Rowan said. "In addition, I'll be learning all about local farming techniques, and will be getting involved with a range of community projects."
