A SPECIAL fundraising event is being held to remember police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty by lighting a series of beacons across the peaks of the Lake District.

Light the Lakes 2018 will see hundreds of walkers climb to the summit of more than 70 of the national park's dramatic fells and light a hilltop beacon once darkness has fallen.

Organisers of the event are urging people to sign up to take part and pay their respects to the nation’s brave police officers before registration closes on April 21.

Organiser Det Sgt Vinny Wagjiani, of Surrey Police, said:“Ever since Light the Lakes started in 2012, it has been our dream to see all of Wainwright’s 214 peaks illuminated with beacons.

"So far we have groups climbing 77 of the peaks so we’re nearly half way there, and we’d love to make it a reality this year.

“Light the Lakes raises money for Care of Police Survivors (COPS), a charity which helps the families of fallen officers to rebuild their lives.

"It has been a devastating few years for the police family so this is a cause that is very close to our hearts.

“The event is open to everyone to take part, not just the police family. In the past we’ve had businesses, scout groups and other members of the emergency services taking part.”

Groups taking part must choose a peak to climb and collect sponsorship money for the challenge. A synchronised lighting of beacons takes place at 3am on June 25. For more information, or to register to take part, email
