A VEGAN couple with a passion for flavourful food are hoping to offer something for everyone with their new food truck venture.

Nikki and Bryan Burrow are behind The Garden Vegan Takeaway, a trailer situated by their home on Dockray Hall Road offering freshly cooked, homemade vegan food.

“We have only been vegan for two years,” said Bryan. “For me it was initially about climate change and the more I found out about veganism and the more I began to appreciate the animal welfare side of things as well.”

Nikki is the main cook in the household and has been experimenting with flavours and different dishes for the past couple of years.

“I’d never eaten as well as I do since I became vegan,” said Bryan.

The Garden Vegan Takeaway menu is not fixed but on offer so far has been soup, egg and cress sandwiches, curries, gumbo, salads and cakes.

And Nikki’s black magic pasties have been proving particularly popular, even with the workers of the nearby industrial estate who are more used to eating bacon sandwiches than plant-based meals.

“Our aim is to be inclusive and serve people that generally would be meat eaters as well as vegans, many of whom have come from miles away to see us,” said Bryan.

“Meat eaters are really surprised that the food is so tasty.”

Bryan is still working in his job as a therapist but Nikki has recently given up her role as a care worker to focus solely on the new business.

“It’s been great so far,” she said. “It’s been really really good. I love to see people enjoy vegan food and to let people know you are not missing out on anything.”

Nikki said that although she went vegan for the health benefits, she has since learned more about animal welfare and climate change.

“I needed to make some changes to my health,” she said. “Within six weeks I just felt so much better and I had more energy and it really was as simple as cutting out meat and dairy.”

As well as offering a menu devoid of animal products, she has chosen to use compostable disposable plates and cutlery to lessen her environmental impact.

The trailer is currently open for business on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11am-4pm. To keep updated, visit https://www.facebook.com/TheGardenVegantakeaway
