MEMBERS of Ulverston and District Civic Society and the Cumbria branch of the Drystone Walling Association came together to carry out repairs to the wall on Little Hoad, nicknamed The Great Wall of China.

The path running between two walls was historically an ‘out gang’ by which stock was taken onto the open hillside and the walls have stood for at least 200 years. Over recent years the walls have started to fall into disrepair and the civic society listed the work as one of its projects.

Last year about 20 metres of wall was totally rebuilt and this year about 40 metres was rebuilt or repaired. It is hoped one more event will successfully rebuild one entire side of the path wall, which is on one of the most popular routes to the Sir John Barrow Monument.

Many people out walking stood and watched and some commented on how much they valued the efforts of the volunteers. GlaxoSmith-Kline made a grant towards the costs of the work.
