EIGHT keen walkers will be lacing up their hiking shoes to tackle 10 Lakeland peaks in 10 hours, all in aid of a Kendal food bank.

Covering 16 miles in total, the fundraisers will start in Grasmere and take on Seat Sandal, Dolly Waggon, Nethermost, Helvellyn, White Side, Raise, Stybarrow Dodd, Watson Dodd, Great Dodd and Clough Head before finishing at Wanthwaite.

All of the money raised will go towards The King's Food Bank in Kendal, which provides food for those in desperate circumstances.

David Laud, a keen walker and passionate supporter of the food bank, is one of those taking part in the challenge.

"While people are very generous giving the food, we also need money to administer it," he said. "We get a lot of food coming in but suddenly you might be scrapped for sugar or something and you need money to get extra."

Mr Laud, who lives in Levens, said he has been doing additional walks to prepare for the May 19 event.

"We've done two long 12 mile walks in snow blizzard and howling rain," the 72-year-old said. "One over the Lake District and one over Mallam.

"It's going to be a long hard day but we wanted to make it a challenge for people to sponsor us."

The group are hoping to raise £1,000 for the food bank, which receives referrals from agencies including the Adult Social Services, Age UK, Impact Foyer and South Lakes Housing.

"If there wasn't the food bank there would be a lot of people who would just starve," he said. "There are some heartbreaking cases."

Mr Laud said that the walk was a good chance for those who were unable to commit a large number of weekly hours to helping at the food bank to give something extra back.

The walkers taking part are alongside Mr Laud are Andy Coram, Dave Garratt, Jonny Elleray, Billy Brindley, Klenam Fiamor-Young, Dianne Reddin, Oliver Reddin and Nat Dawson.

"The main driving reason for us doing this is that we don't like to see poverty," Mr Laud said. "And that's what it comes down to."
