MAJOR plans for up to 238 homes on Carnforth's southern edge have won the backing of town councillors.

The dwellings would range from one-bedroom apartments to four-bedroom detached houses, with 95 affordable dwellings "pepper potted" throughout the greenfield site.

After discussing the outline plans, Carnforth Town Council gave its support and said it endorsed the developer's "vision to provide an attractive, high-quality extension" to the town.

They added they would be "vigilant" in ensuring the burden on existing infrastructure was "mitigated", such as the impact on air quality from extra traffic.

The 16.8 hectare parcel of undulating grazing land is just outside the town's boundary, in open countryside. More than half the site would become a wetlands conservation area, and there would also be a play area, kickabout pitch and cycle track.

The Newry-based developer, KSC Developments, is proposing access for cars, bikes and pedestrians to Scotland Road, as well as bike and pedestrian access to Carnforth Brow.

A Roman road was "purported to cross the site" but a geophysical survey has found little evidence, according to planning documents.

The final decision rests with Lancaster City Council.
