100 YEARS AGO - 1918
The DSO has been awarded to Lt Humphrey W Boddington Yeo. attd. Yorkshire LI, of Ambleside. He was ordered at very short notice to carry out a counter attack and re-establish a position which had been captured by the enemy. He organised the operation with great skill and initiative and led two companies to assembly positions under heavy fire.
50 YEARS AGO - 1968
Closed circuit television may be used this summer to trap fast-moving speedboats on Windermere. Yesterday, Home Office wireless technicians gave a demonstration of the new technique to Westmorland magistrates, local councillors and Cumbria police officers.
25 YEARS AGO - 1993
Grange-over-Sands’ open air swimming pool is to be dug up and fears have been raised over its long term future following news that it is leaking 12,000 gallons of water every day. South Lakeland district councillors heard the source of the leak was mystery and will cost thousands to repair.
