YOUNGSTERS donned hard hats and hi-vis vests as they received a lesson in building site safety.

Story Homes, which is creating 49 new dwellings at Greengate Meadow, Levens, visited nearby Levens CE Primary School to spread the word on keeping safe.

Assistant site manager Jamie Davies was accompanied by friendly mascot Builder Bear as he met the infant pupils and shared a new health and safety workshop with them, called A Safety Story.

The children also had chance to identify potential hazards and types of construction equipment, and pupils from Year Two visited Greengate Meadow to see for themselves the new homes being built, and also meet site manager Gary Hunter and the team.

Levens head teacher Jane Farraday said the youngstesr enjoyed "a fantastic morning" and had since been busy in school on projects such as calculating the number of bricks needed to build a house, writing a newspaper report, and sharing their experience in a celebratory assembly with parents.

“It was a very worthwhile project to be involved in with key messages for our youngest children and families about keeping safe in our community,” Mrs Farraday added.

Story Homes production manager Mark Irving said: "We have a responsibility to the communities in which we build to not only enhance the area but to minimise any disruption caused by our work – and this includes ensuring our neighbours are kept safe.

“With the spring holidays approaching it was timely to remind them of the potential dangers on a building site."
