The Westmorland Gazette today celebrates its 200th anniversary.

It was on May 23, 1818, that the newspaper was first published and, ever since then, it has been reporting on events in this part of the world every week.

This week we have published a special 48-page commemorative supplement, focusing on the history of the Gazette, how it has reported local and national events over the years, famous Westmorland characters and some of the most eye-catching images that have featured in the newspaper.

The supplement, price £1.50, is now available in newsagents and outlets throughout the area and at the Gazette Reception at Wainwright's Yard in Kendal.

There is also a special exhibition - From Wordsworth to the Web: 200 years of The The Westmorland Gazette - on show at the Musuem of Lakeland Life and Industry at Kendal.

And every single day this year we are publishing an archives photograph from the Gazette on this website.

Thank you to all readers and advertisers who continue to support The Westmorland Gazette.

We are proud to be part of a legacy that goes back 200 years and look forward to serving the people of South Lakeland, Furness, Eden, north Lancashire and North Yorkshire in the years to come.
