WHAT is faith? Believing in something beyond the power of reason to explain? It seems to me that theists and atheists have equally strong, but opposite, beliefs in whether a supreme, eternal, intelligent, almighty being exists or not. In my view every building has a builder and so far as I can remember I have always believed there must be some kind of God. A God that is way beyond the comprehension of man, unknowable. I understand why someone would choose to be agnostic. We are not talking about something that can be proved or disproved. I can also understand why people who believe in God choose to express their beliefs through a variety of different religions. A year ago this column was extended to include contributions from other faith groups. We have heard from Baha'is, Buddhists, Green Spirit, Muslims, as well as from a wider range of Christian groups than before. We would like to hear from you too. What do you believe? The interfaith network is represented locally by the South Lakeland Interfaith Forum (SLIF). Our aim is to build good relations between people of different faiths and beliefs, promoting mutual respect and understanding. This is the key. Whatever we believe it would be better if we could coexist peacefully, respecting, rather than belittling, one another’s views. If you would like to contribute to the group or to this column please contact us through our website, or come and find us at the Kendal Unity Festival on June 23.
