TWO new groups to support patients who have been diagnosed with life shortening conditions are set to launch in Kendal thanks to funding from the Lottery.

The groups, run by St John's Hospice will follow the formula of the hospice’s existing Positive Living Groups (PLG) running at the Oak Centre, part of the Lancaster hospice.

Living with a life shortening condition can be really challenging, not just for the patient but the families too.

The PLGs have been developed to help patients and their families to improve their quality of life by sharing useful information and increasing awareness and understanding of the services and support available within the community.

Patients and their carers attend weekly for six sessions and have the opportunity to speak to and learn from experienced guest speakers and health professionals.

Topics covered during the sessions include how to manage stress and anxiety, lifestyle changes as well as exercise and nutrition tips. There is also an opportunity to meet people facing similar challenges in a supportive environment.

Vanda Thorpe, senior health care assistant at the hospice, and who has been involved in the groups in Lancaster, from inception three years ago, said: “It has been so rewarding to see how our patients and their carers attending PLG have become more positive and more empowered to live an independent life.

"Now due to the Lottery funding so generously awarded to us we can bring this vital and highly beneficial group to Kendal to support people in the South Lakes community."

The two groups are set to be held in Kendal this financial year. If you would like to find out more about the PLGs visit www.sjhospice.org.uk or telephone the hospice on 01524 382538 and ask to speak to staff in The Oak Centre.

Alternatively please ask your health care professional to refer you direct to the hospice for the next PLG in Kendal or at the hospice on Slyne Road, Lancaster.
