SOUTH Lakes residents are being warned of a phishing scam involving emails that appear to have been sent by Cumbria Police.

The emails being sent out are entitled 'Notice of intended prosecution' and marked as if from Cumbria Police.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: "These are not sent from your local police, therefore do not open these emails they are simply a method of extracting personal information including bank details.

"The emails that have been sent out will look very authentic with the Cumbria Police crest, requesting £100 fixed penalty notice for speeding in your local area."

Please note that if you do receive a speeding fine of a fixed penalty notice, it will always be through the post.
