NEXT screening in the Royalty's Silent Film series is The Docks of New York, being shown at the Bowness cinema on Saturday, July 7 (2pm).
The film from acclaimed director, Josef von Sternberg, was released in 1928 and stars George Bancroft as a ship's stoker making the most of shore leave in the gritty bars of New York's docklands. The movie came on the back of the film Underworld, released the previous year which also saw Bancroft and von Sternberg collaborating. Both films were tremendous successes and set the fashion for many of the gangster films that followed in the 1930s. "Von Sternbergs use of sparse sets and innovative lighting, combined with the bold fashions of the 1920s, really draw the viewer in," says Royalty boss, Charles Morris."The films are incredibly watchable for a modern audience, despite being released over 90 years ago."
The Docks of New York will be accompanied by Mark Latimer at the Royalty's famed 1927 Wurlitzer organ.
Tickets are available from the Royalty box office.
