RESIDENTS have been told to be wary of cold callers after reports of fish sellers operating in Kirkby Lonsdale and the surrounding areas.

Cumbria Trading Standards have received reports of fish sellers operating from a white van, cold calling.

The body has told residents to be wary and report any uninvited fish salesmen operating within these areas.

A spokesperson for Cumbria County Council said: "Fish sellers visiting Cumbria are known to engage in cold calling activities asking residents to purchase large amounts of frozen fish on the doorstep.

"This fish is generally of poor quality, unrefrigerated and short weight.  Doorstep sellers often demand a cash or cheque payment and can be very persuasive in their selling techniques.

"Cumbria Trading Standards and Cumbria Police advice is simple; don’t let uninvited doorstep sellers of any kind into your home. Often these sellers prey on the most vulnerable who are less likely to refuse what may appear to be a bargain. For all your goods and services it is better to deal with reputable traders operating out of fixed premises who you know and trust."
