A TOWN is claiming to have gained a second mass participation world record after hundreds of people put on comical party hats.

Thousands of people flooded into Ulverston at the weekend to take part in the madness that is Another Fine Fest.

This annual celebration, which marks the birthday of town’s legendary comic, Stan Laurel, offered attendees live music, comedy, street art and three record breaking attempts.

The attempt for the largest gathering of people wearing comical party hats attracted 900 participants, which organisers believe is enough to take the record.

“I am full of civic pride at the moment,” said Jennie Dennett, one of the organisers. “It didn’t stop raining all morning but 900 people put on their party hats, silly wigs, even an inflatable dinosaur costume and came anyway. I think we should have ‘Commitment to Party’ written on our town sign.”

Ulverston is set to take the comical hats world record from Wakefield, beating the previous tally of 641 hats.

After the record attempt, festival colour made from food dye and cornflour was thrown, adding a splash of colour to Saturday’s damp weather proceedings.

The 900-strong crowd also played musical statues and wore odd socks for two separate record attempts. But they were just shy of the record tallies.

“We really got in another fine mess,” said Jennie. “With comedy events like this we like to think we are upholding the spirit of Stan.”

Evidence of the record attempt will now be sent to Guinness for its approval.

“We hope to one day become the town with the most mass participation world records but with two in the bag (world’s largest shaving cream pie fight, 2016) and this one pending approval by Guinness, more silliness will be required to make that dream come true,” said Jennie.
