A GLOBETROTTING adventurer has returned home to the Lake District for his newest BBC series.

Paul Rose, who lives in Windermere, is the man behind the new four-part series 'The Lakes with Paul Rose'.

Former vice president of the Royal Geographical Society and chair of the Expeditions and Fieldwork Division, Paul is currently Expedition Leader for the National Geographic Pristine Seas Expeditions.

When he spoke to the Gazette, he was in-between dive trips in the Azores for a Pristine Seas trip but his enthusiasm for the Lake District shone through.

"The big thing for me is that I love living in the Lake District," Mr Rose said. "I've known the Lake District all my life and I moved up there nearly 20 years ago.

For me it really is home. I work all over the world in these beautiful wild remote places from the Arctic to Antarctica and all the great spots in-between.

"I'd come back and get a BBC programme about somewhere else and yet I was living in the beautiful Lake District and I thought what does it take to get a programme about the Lake District."

He said that following the success of some walking programmes he had been involved in, he 'had a sense' that the Lake District would be a good fit.

"So we spent all of last summer filming it," he said. "And every day felt like a bit of a celebration. I was working in my own part of the country and it felt really great to celebrate the Lake District every day."

In the first episode Mr Rose explores Windermere and takes the helm of one the Windermere cruise ships.

He also goes in hunt of things modern day visitors may miss, including a hound trailing event that has been a part of the Lakes calendar for more than 200 years.

The following episodes explore Derwentwater and Borrowdale, Coniston and Eskdale.

"It was the best summer I've had," Mr Rose said. "It was absolutely beautiful. I feel it's a very personal 'my Lake District' programme."

Mr Rose will appear at Kendal's Brewery Arts Centre on July 10 for a screening of two of the episodes. Apply for tickets at bbc.co.uk/showsandtours

The programme airs on BBC One in the North West on July 20 and nationally on BBC Two in autumn.
