A FLOOKBURGH man will be attempting to travel 500 miles in Scotland in two weeks using a method of transportation normally reserved for circus tents.

Fionn Jordan, 27, is tackling the North Coast 500 route on his unicycle, with ambitions of riding 36 miles every day.

Fionn, a freelance illustrator, started unicycling 13 years ago after he joined a circus skills group in Grange.

"I had always had a vague interest in circus stuff from my parents friends," he said. "I could juggle and do Diablo and there were unicycles at the club."

Since, he has gone on to do mountain unicycling and has started training for long distance rides.

"Unicycling is quirky but I think now that I have stuck with it it's not really a gimmick," he said. "You can cover a lot of ground on it. It's an effectual way to travel and you have to train hard."

He added it was mentally taxing as he was unable to 'zone out' while he was riding.

Fionn will be making the trip with his brother, Huw, who will be cycling on two wheel, carrying some of the kit and documenting the journey.

He needs to fundraise £2,000 to help pay for the trip as well as to be able to make a donation to Cancer Research.

"Three of my grandparents had cancer so it's quite personal," he said. "I think they would appreciate me doing it."

The trip starts in Inverness and will take in some tough hills over the first few days.

"I'm excited and nervous," he said. "I am looking forward to it but I have got quite a lot to plan still."
