A "LIFESTYLE-focused development" exclusively for over-55s could breathe new life into Arnside’s iconic Grade II-listed Ashmeadow House.

Bruno and Dr Anita Herdeiro, of Luxury Living Development Ltd, have submitted an offer for the Georgian property. They say they are planning to invest up to £3 million in the project.

The couple have already turned their "lifestyle concept" into reality by converting Scalesceugh Hall near Carlisle, and building 13 eco-friendly luxury villas on the site.

Bruno and Anita, a qualified GP, say this ethos would spread to south Cumbria if their offer is accepted and plans are approved.

The Herdeiros have offered £1.5 million to buy Ashmeadow from Crossfield Housing Society, which wound up its own retirement development there in 2017 because of lack of demand for the luxury apartments.

The house would be converted into two-bedroom retirement flats with facilities and concierge services, plus a wellness spa and bungalows on site.

Crossfield wants to build more retirement properties on a new plot on Redhills Road, Arnside, and the Herdeiros have proposed that they be employed as contractors in a further £1 million scheme, building five spacious, glass-fronted detached retirement bungalows.

The proposal has been inspired by eco-friendly developments researched in Scandinavia and New Zealand.

Bruno Herdeiro told the Gazette: “The concept is simple - we want to create lifestyle developments in idyllic locations for people to make the best of their retirement. Cumbria is the perfect place to do it.

“We are committed to bringing Ashmeadow House back to life, and are confident that the creation of new retirement bungalows at Redhills Road could become a great example of Crossfield Housing Society’s standards and commitment to quality housing for older people.”

Only three villas remain at Scalesceugh Hall, which is to be formally opened tomorrow (June 22). www.scalesceughvillas.co.uk.
