FLUTES and Co - Cumbria's own 35-strong flute orchestra - stages its summer Flute Tango, on Saturday, July 7.

The programme for the St Thomas's Church at Kendal concert spans four centuries and crosses continents, with arrangements of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Smetana's Moldau and Piazzolla's Libertango.

The concert also includes original compositions such as Single Yellow Line by Gareth McLearnon, using extended flute techniques and Umoja by contemporary American composer Valerie Coleman.

One of the highlights of the fabulous flute ensemble's concert promises to be flautist and local jazz singer Laura Tattersall's rendition of Let's Do it, Let's Fall in Love with flute choir backing.

And six talented players will share the solos in Telemann's Double Flute concerto, including long standing members Laura Braithwaite and Lily Tidman. Laura says Flutes and Co has really improved her playing and massively benefitted her confidence: "I'm conducting the Young Ensemble in this concert which will be a really fun challenge."

Lily adds: "I've really enjoyed the opportunity to play lots of different flutes and I think it's great that younger members are encouraged to get involved on the committee and in transposing and arranging pieces."

Musical director Sue Nicholls says the performance will finish with an arrangement of Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked.

The concert starts at 7pm.
