CARNFORTH'S Mayor is 'not happy' with the news that a traffic diversion that caused 'horrendous' disruption looks set to return to the town.

Two weeks ago, the Gazette reported that residents of the north Lancashire town were becoming frustrated at M6 traffic being sent through the town as a result of overnight closures on the southbound carriageway.

The M6 had been closed overnight from junction 35 at Carnforth to junction 34 at Halton for resurfacing work, with most traffic being diverted onto the A6.

However, HGV traffic was diverted on Kellet Road to avoid a low bridge on the preferred route to the A6. Traffic lights on Kellet Road led to HGV traffic queuing through Carnforth, with residents reporting disruption throughout the night.

Following the publication of the article, the diversion was altered. However, the resurfacing work is set to resume on Monday (July 2) with nightly closures of the carriageway for five further nights.

Mayor of the town Councillor Bob Roe said that he was 'not very happy' about the news.

"We are back to major disruption again that we cannot do anything about," he said. "I know they are saying they cannot do anything but they should have learnt their lesson by now."

He said that once residents heard the news, he anticipated that they would be in touch with him to express their frustrations.

"Last time was horrendous," he said. "People just could not get to sleep. Wagons outside their houses all night, the roads were congested."

However, Highways England has said that it has listened to people's concerns about the original diversion route and arranged an alternative.

Larger vehicles will not be sent through Carnforth and it is anticipated that only 20 to 30 heavy goods vehicles would use Kellet Road between 10pm-6am.

"We would like to thank everyone concerned for their patience while we work to complete this project," the Highways England spokesperson said.
