A WINDERMERE youth group walked 21 miles in order to raise money to fund for their project.

Members of the Windermere Youth Project, who chose the distance as it is equivalent to the length of Windermere and back, walked the distance in one mile laps of the Glebe in Bowness.

The challenge was completed by rolling relay teams, and was done in three hours and 36 minutes.

The event was started off by the High Sheriff, Simon Berry who was dressed in his full regalia and he walked some of the first mile with the group.

Organiser Sarah Cutts said: "As the County Council redirected funding from open provision youth clubs to other services in 2014, it has become harder to find the funding to keep this very popular, long running youth club in operation."

"On the day we had a street collection and a raffle, with numerous local businesses kindly donating prizes and the young people received sponsorship for the event.

"The day raised £359.66 in total and we are grateful for all the support.

"The money raised will go towards running costs for the youth club. Lakeland Ltd have also kindly offered to match fund anything we can raise up to £5000, which we really appreciate."

Windermere Youth Project runs at the Phoenix Centre in Windermere on a Thursday evening during term time.

It is open to all young people in the local area. There are two youth clubs, one for School Year’s 5 + 6 and one for those in Year 7 and above.

This year the group has have worked with a total of 62 local young people in the clubs and the youth club provides a vital space for young people to socialise, learn and try new things.
