I COULD not believe my eyes when I saw the new pedestrian crossing on Burton Road at Kendal at the entrance to Kendal Care Home, a place where presumably very few people will benefit from it.
Almost all the built-up area on Burton Road is already at that side of the road. I presume this has been done as part of the Burton Road cycle path 'pot', one of the ring-fenced accounts that Cumbria County Council has which can’t be used for anything else.
At the same time, at the Helme Chase traffic lights, for many years parents and children heading for Heron Hill School, Heron Hill residents walking to Asda or Helme Chase Surgery – amounting to hundreds of pedestrian movements each day – have had to dodge from island to island between the traffic phases to cross the road as there is no pedestrian phase there.
How many other dreadful junctions are there in Kendal that are in need of attention – for instance the Glebe Road junction with Milnthorpe Road, the Sandylands Road junction with Appleby Road, and getting out of Appleby Road at the Duke of Cumberland?
Perhaps Cumbria County Council Highways should do some proper surveys of traffic problems in Kendal and prioritise its spending.
