RESIDENTS of Sandylands in Kendal will be celebrating at their first summer fete since 2015 this weekend.

The housing estate bore the brunt of the December 2015 floods, and the popular July fete has not taken place for the past two years while the community has been recovering.

On the guest list for Saturday afternoon's gathering at the Friendship Fields play park from 1pm are Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron, SLDC leader Cllr Giles Archibald, Kendal mayor Cllr Guy Tirvengadum, and town and district councillors Helen Ladhams, Eamonn Hennessy and Rachael Hogg.

Adam Edwards, of Sandylands Residents Association, said the event's many supporters included Sandylands Methodist Church, the People's Cafe, Cumbria police, Kendal and District Lions, and Cumbria fire service, who will be parking up a fire engine.

Attractions will include a field full of stalls, ice creams, bouncy castle, face painting, games, owls, live music, Kendal's town crier, and a dog show staged with support from Pets and Home (categories - best in show, best veteran, most appealing eyes, waggiest tail, best junior handler, and best soft toy).

Advice and help will be on hand from the North East Kendal Flood Action Group, South Lakeland District Council, Credit Union and NatWest bank.

Mr Edwards, who was a Westmorland Gazette Flood Hero with his wife Leone, praised the generosity of businesses who had donated prizes, such as Kendal Goldsmiths, Majestic Wines, Sandylands Spar, Todds, The Works, This N That, The Body Shop, Sandylands Post Office and Beales.
