A CHARITY race night held in aid of pancreatic cancer research was a roaring success.

The night was put on by Holly Nicholson, of Kendal, in memory of her grandfather Robert, who died aged 67 of the disease last August. He had only been diagnosed just over two weeks beforehand.

The race, held at Kendal Golf Club, night consisted of many video races that people could bet on, a raffle with some very generous prizes and a bottle bola for the adults.

Family and friends enjoyed a pie and peas supper, race fun and a few drinks - all of which were favourites of the late Robert.

Holly, who is training to be a nurse, said: "Punters also were very generous in the last race when an auction was held and over £200 was raised which was split 50/50 with the lucky recipient.

"The night was a great success and exceeded all expectations. In conjunction with a sponsored skydive donations through Justgiving, just over £3000 was raised."

All the proceeds are going straight to Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund where the money can be invested into further research to support people diagnosed with the disease.

Holly added: "I would like to thank all my family and friends and supporters on the night who made the night the success it was.

"I would also like to mention all the generous companies and local businesses who sponsored races and donated wonderful prizes."

Pancreatic Cancer is the fifth most common cause of cancer death and affects around 9,500 people a year.

It is notoriously difficult to detect in the early stages and is very difficult to treat. This is because the cancer is very aggressive and symptoms do not tend to develop until the disease is at a late stage.
