BROTHERS from Grange-over-Sands have raised more than £2,000 for The Alzheimer's Association in memory of their Welsh grandmother.

Oliver and David Gent took part in the Great North Swim following the death of their grandmother Dorothy Ruell.

Oliver, 22, said that he used to do 'a fair bit of swimming' but the one mile effort had been taxing.

"It's something I have always wanted to do and I thought it might be easier than say a half marathon," he said. "Being from the Lake District it seemed like quite a reasonable thing to do.

"It was really hard on the day. I think it was mainly because my wetsuit was a bit too tight! It was probably one of the most strenuous things I have every done."

Oliver said that he planned on taking part in the swim again next year but planned on attempting the two mile distance.
