LAMPPOSTS throughout Windermere and Bowness have been decorated with a poppy - each representing one of more than 130 local young men who gave their lives for their country in World War One.

The idea to mark 100 years since the end of The Great War came from Simone Backhouse, Bowness & Windermere Community Care Trust).

She contacted the British Legion, who supplied the poppies and Windermere Town Council, who provided grant funding and support.

"The poppies look a treat and it just goes to show what can be achieved when a number of local organisations work well together," said Julie Hartley, clerk to the town council.

The poppies will be in situ until the end of November.

The 100th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force has also not been forgotten. A permanent red, white and blue labelled planter has been designed for the Baddeley Clock Millennium Garden by Gary Hancox, Windermere Town Steward.

There will be further events organised throughout the year to commemorate the end of the First World War, culminating in the lighting of the Windermere Town Council beacon on the summit of Orrest Head on November 11, as part of the national chain of beacons.
