On May 17 in the Podium column of this newspaper, Francis Mason Hornby, Registrar of the Dalton Woodland Burial Ground, wrote about the importance of talking about death and dying.
He suggested that ..’we in the modern west are particularly squeamish’ about talking about the end of life. He also mentioned the Death Café, a social franchise not-for-profit movement, which was started in the UK by John Underwood in 2011.
To date there have been more than 60,000 death cafes globally. We are a group of local people, who started Kendal Death Café over a year ago, holding meetings at the Waterside Café and the Warehouse, Brewery Arts Centre.
Our discussions have no agendas, objectives or conclusions. Conversations are often lively, sometimes amusing and refreshingly honest, alongside drinks and savouries and cake.
The next Kendal Death Café is at the Brewery Arts Centre Warehouse Café on Wednesday, August 8 from 6pm to 8.30pm. All are welcome. For further information please go to the website deathcafe .com.
We would be grateful if anyone intending to join us could signify their intention in advance as indicated on the website.
