THE RNLI today rescued a lone yachtsman who had become unwell and required a medical evacuation.

Barrow’s RNLI crew launched their inshore lifeboat, Vision of Tamworth, early this morning. The yachtsman’s boat was moored in Walney Channel, off Piel Island, not far from the coast of Barrow.

The RNLI were alerted to the incident at 6.25am following a call from HM Coastguard at Holyhead. The lifeboat was launched just seven minutes later.

The three crew members - Dave Kell at the helm, assisted by Adam Cleasby and Saul Tomlin - reached the scene within a few minutes in light winds.

The stricken yachtsman was safely returned to the mainland and placed in the care of the North West Ambulance Service. Furness Coastguard also attended and members were prepared to offer assistance if required.
