KENDAL Amateur Athletics Club’s track and field team produced a much-improved performance at their meet at Burnley, the third round of the year in the Northern League.

With a great team effort, combined with a much stronger ladies team than the club has previously enjoyed, Kendal secured their Division Three status with a 3rd place team result, behind Seaton (Whitehaven) and Southport.

Even though it is highly unlikely they will do so, if they can pull out all the stops at their final match at Whitehaven in August, they have an outside chance of promotion to Division Two for next season.

On a very hot day, the team spirit was evident, with many athletes putting in multi-event and fantastic personal performances.

The highlight of the day was the men’s 4 x100m relay team of Charlie Norton, Dan Shuttleworth, James Barlow and Tom Matthews, who summed up the spirit of the day, with a gritty winning performance of 47.9 sec, achieved with a blistering final leg from Barlow who came back from third to give Kendal the win.

Other individual winners were Rebecca Robinson who won both the 1500m in 4 minutes 59 seconds and the 3,000m in 10.02.9, Amy Wood was successful in the high-jump with a 1.35m best, Quintin Gratix came out on top in 800m with a time of 2.04.2 sec, and Reuben Copley won the 1500m event in 4.29.6 sec.

Many of the athletes also competed in three or more events, with notable performances from Dom Musetti, Matthew Fleming, Shane King and Lisa Screen contributing to the overall team result.

Kendal are hoping to field an even stronger team for league next meeting, at Seaton (Whitehaven) in August. Anyone wishing to join Kendal AAC’s Track and Field team, can find all the relevant details on the club website kendalac.co.uk.

l Kendal AAC also had athletes competing at the English Schools Championships in Birmingham this weekend.

All four of the club’s members in attendance made the final in their respective events.

The best result went to Alex Birkett in the senior boys. He was second in the 800m race. Elsewhere, Rosie Woodhams took 3rd in 3,000m, Steph Driscoll was fifth at 300m hurdles, and Fraser Sproul was 10th in the 1500m.
