AS A local resident and driver I used a road which I seldom use last weekend - the A592, along Windermere's lakeside between Newby Bridge and Bowness - and was surprised to see the speed limit signs along the majority of my route were for 50mph.

The road is winding and quite narrow along large sections and I consider the 50mph signs as potentially dangerous and misleading to those drivers encountering that particular route for the first time.

These drivers could reasonably expect that 50mph is achievable, safely along the A592. I suggest that 50mph is a speed which is impossible to achieve, except for over very short, wider, straighter sections of the road. Only approaching the Storrs area does the speed limit reduce.

I believe the A592 is an accident blackspot at busy times of the year and I suggest adjusting the speed limit would help improve the outcome of collisions and reduce the occurrence.

I notice also this week that the road signs along the A591 between Windermere and Ambleside are illegible in some cases, due to the build up of mossy deposit - especially in the shady areas.

As a very busy tourist route, where many spend long periods in queueing traffic, this gives a very poor first impression of the Lake District to visitors, as well as the safety implications of illegible warning signs!

This particular road has the Lake District Visitor Centre, Brockhole and many top class hotels on each side. The road sweeper was out in action this last week so may I suggest the signs should be given some attention.
