AN anti Donald Trump protestor from Kendal was intercepted by a Ministry of Defence high speed patrol boat as he took his protest against the American president to the waters off the coast of Scotland.

Mark Arrowsmith managed to dodge the high security surrounding the visit of the the US president as he kayaked 50m off the shore of Trump Turnberry while waving a protest placard from his small craft.

Donald Trump and his wife Melanie were stopping at the exclusive golf resort on day two of an official visit to the United Kingdom when the president met Prime Minister Theresa May and the Queen.

At Turnberry, protesters who had gathered on the nearby beach climbed a hill to ensure the president could see them when he took to the golf course.

Mr Trump waved as they shouted: “No Trump, no KKK, no racist USA.”

Mr Arrowsmith hatched his unlikely plan while at the 250,000-strong anti-Trump demo in London last Friday.

“I was appalled that our government had rolled out the red carpet for this man,” he said. “Like the vast majority of the British public, I think it’s important to stand up to Trump, which is why, having gone to the London demo, I followed him up to Scotland.

“To my surprise, I managed to avoid a heavy police and military presence and was able to get within 50 metres of the resort, before being intercepted by the Ministry of Defence’s high speed patrol boat. I was taken back to shore and, after questioning, a couple of police liaison officers escorted me back to Glasgow to make sure I didn’t continue my Turnberry protest.”

Mr Arrowsmith, 55, a supply teacher in Cumbria and Lancashire, added “Kayaking to the heavily fortified resort seemed like a crazy idea and unlikely to succeed, but I had a strong sense of wanting to make a stand.”
