AS I have said many times in this column, being a parent and raising a family does at times require a military approach, especially when organising and preparing for something such as the summer holidays.

Thinking ahead and preparing well are key to a smooth holiday period. During the six weeks that lie ahead you may have to think about childcare, breaks away, entertaining different age ranges, and times where you can relax as a family.

I read somewhere that summer holidays with your children are precious as you only have 18 of them; when repeating this to my husband he brought that number down, stating that of course you might only have 16 or 17 as your teen may want to holiday with their friends rather than you!

So how do you ensure the long summer days ahead are carefree and happy?

- Try to consult all family members and make a list.

- Look for activities that are low-cost or free to attend - children's centres have free events around the county' contact them for more information by emailing enquiries.southlakeland@barnardos.org.uk

- My list of favourites goes a little like this: picnics in parks, by the side of a lake, river or stream; taking a walk, cycling or taking a bus; climbing a fell or hill; visiting the library or a local museum, or leisure centre; baking or making salt dough.

If at any point during the holidays your patience is being tested, remember you will only have 18, 17 or even 16 summers with your children before they are off to do their own thing.

Wishing you a happy family summertime!
