SUNSHINE and singing made Ulverston the place to be at the weekend as two different festivals took place together.

The Furness Tradition Folk Festival and Retro Rendezvous saw locals and visitors out in force enjoying the weather, music and performances.

Children and adults all enjoyed themselves at the festivals which were held in Ulverston town centre.

The town was vibrant and booming as people lined up for coconut shies and tapped their feet along to the catchy folk tunes that floated through the air.

John Thompson, from Dalton, who had his motorbike in the town centre for the Retro Rendezvous, said: “These Ulverston festivals are really good, really chilled out.

“The festivals are easy going and everyone seems to enjoy them.

“There’s a really eclectic mix of music and people here today which is what it’s all about.

“The weather has been great and there’s been loads of people in the town.

“I’ve had a great time and I’m sure everyone else has too.”

Meanwhile, the Furness Tradition Folk Festival celebrated its 20th anniversary at the weekend.

At the start of the event in Ulverston town centre, the town’s mayor and mayoress Dave and Sharon Webster led the parade down New Market Street to the Town Square.

Gordon Jones, chairman of Furness Tradition Folk Festival, said it was “quite interesting” having the Retro Rendezvous festival also taking place over the same weekend.

Speaking on the day, he said: “There’s a lot going on.

“We’ve got morris dancers dancing around classic cars.

"We’ve had bands, dancers and a big parade.

“Everything has come together nicely, everyone has enjoyed themselves and it’s looking like a nice event.”

Visitors from around the country who descended on the town on a whim were surprised to find so much activity.

Jan Berry, from Hampshire, who was visiting the area with her family, said: “The whole town is very nice, the atmosphere here today is spectacular. I didn’t expect it.

“The people are lovely and there’s so many interesting things going on.”
